Michael Benjamin (1961 - 2022)
Michael Benjamin was one of the early adopters of Flying Disc Sports in Australia, attending his first Frisbee© event in 1977 at Princes Park in Carlton Victoria.
Michael’s sister, Carolyn Dunn, had bought him a Toltoys Frisbee for Christmas, he found out about the fledgling Australian Frisbee Association and his disc involvement began.
Michael was the Australian Junior Overall Champion in 1978 and was part of the first Australian team at the World Frisbee Championships in Los Angeles. He was selected in the International All Stars Ultimate team to play against the USA team playing an Ultimate demo game in front of 50,000 spectators at the Rose Bowl.
Michael continued to play in tournaments all around Australia and was an integral part of the early history of disc sports in Australia.
When Michael died in 2022, his sister Carolyn gifted his small disc collection to Melbourne Disc Golf Club (MDGC). It was agreed that the discs would be sold, with the proceeds from the sale shared between Dementia Australia (as a donation for dementia research and support for families) and to MDGC to support disc sports development.
AMDG currently has two of Michael Benjamin’s 1979 World Championship Frisbees up for the Masters Fundraiser Auction. 100% of the proceeds of Michael’s frisbee’s will be donated to Dementia Australia.
